In considering, Stephen Elliot’s “Where I Slept”, the narrator starts off by saying, “This is a story I’ve never told.” What is story from your life which you’ve never told?
What about the places you have slept? Catalog them…tell as much about each place as you are willing.
The narrator says, “This is just a list of the different places I slept, it’s the only way I can get any perspective.” What are ways that you’ve lost perspective? How did you lose it and how did you get it back?

4. Tim says he feels a “kernel of pain” because the last words he was to scream to CJ were to “GET OUT”. Are there words said by you or to you that you regret?

1. Why is it that Abby feels that this summer will “go on for the rest of my life”? Why does this frustrate her?
2. What’s the connection between Abby’s outlook on life and the heat of the summer?
3. Why does the author call this story “Aftertaste”? How does Abby’s “aftertaste” compare to what she knows about Gideon? How can Abby escape that aftertaste of heroin? Will it ever go away?
4. At the end of the story, Gideon and Abby stand at the window looking at the pipe cleaner flowers. At this point in the story, Abby and Gideon both see the beauty in the pipe cleaner flowers; what’s the significance of the moment when Abby looks at the window through Gideon’s eyes? What’s the significance of the phrase, “as graceful as fully living things”? Is Abby a fully living thing or is she the pipe cleaner flower that just looks real?
